As the UFC brand and MMA as a sport continue to grow, the sport of boxing finds itself still struggling to stay at the top of the combat sports world. There are several ongoing complaints in the world of boxing, and Teddy Atlas feels he has the answer to boxing’s issues. Talking on his podcast about how fans miss out on matchups due to the politics of boxing, Atlas said the biggest change that can happen to benefit the sport is to make it more like the UFC. Atlas said the best thing for boxing to do is to get a promoter — or “dictator” — like UFC President Dana White involved.

Ben Askren is now firmly embedded as a member of the UFC welterweight roster, having submitted Robbie Lawler at UFC 235. Unfortunately, his relationship with UFC President Dana White apparently remains strained. Speaking on The MMA Hour on Monday, Askren explained that he still feels quite a bit of disdain from the UFC boss. In fact, he feels White is “repulsed” by him.

When Anthony Johnson announced his retirement from MMA, a fight many fans were disappointed that didn’t happen is ‘Rumble’ vs. Jon Jones. The fight had major intrigue given the fact Jones had looked unstoppable and Johnson had legitimate one-punch knockout power. The two were scheduled to fight at UFC 187 but the fight was called off after Jones was involved in a hit and run. From then on, the fight just didn’t come to fruition and Johnson walked away from MMA without ever getting the chance to fight Jones.

On Saturday night, on the main card of UFC 235 in Las Vegas, Nevada, former ONE Championship and Bellator welterweight king Ben Askren finally made his UFC debut. The undefeated wrestler was matched up with former UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler — and the fight nearly ended in disaster for him. Seconds into the first round, Askren shot in for a takedown. Lawler denied this attempt, hoisted Askren into the air, and whacked him back down to the canvas like he was trying to get a glob of peanut butter off a spoon.

Kamaru Usman did not let his UFC 235 welterweight title shot go to waste. For five rounds, the streaking challenger took the fight to the long-time champion Tyron Woodley, ultimately earning a unanimous decision win — and the belt — as a result. Now that he’s the champion, Usman would seem to have a plethora of options for his first title defense. There’s a potential rematch with Woodley. Back in January, UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov was finally disciplined for his role in the wild brawl that followed his UFC 229 victory over Conor McGregor. The Dagestani champion received a $500,000 fine and a nine-month suspension, which can be reduced to six months if he completes an anti-bullying PSA approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Nurmagomedov will not be partaking in the NSAC’s proposed PSA — he recently made his thoughts on that quite clear. Furthermore, the champ actually plans to sit out until November, standing in solidarity with his teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who were suspended for one year for their roles in the brawl.
