Dana White fires back at Tyron Woodley following UFC 209

In the main event of UFC 209, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley retained his welterweight strap in a rather controversial performance against welterweight #1 contender Stephen Thompson as he was awarded a majority decision. Many, including UFC President Dana White scored the bout 3 rounds to 2, with Stephen Thompson being the winner. With that being said, the judges scorecards revealed that one judge scored the 5th round 10-8 for Tyron Woodley, resulting in that scorecard being a draw, rather than a decision for Stephen Thompson.

After being forced to withdraw from last night’s UFC 209 event in Las Vegas, UFC president Dana White is unsure what the future holds for undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” was supposed to square off with fellow top contender Tony Ferguson for the promotions interim lightweight title at yesterday’s event, however a bad weight cut forced the AKA product out of the highly anticipated fight.

Last night, in the main event of UFC 209, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley scored a majority decision win over challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who he first fought to a majority draw back in November. While Woodley’s win was extremely important for his career, however, it was not particularly thrilling. The slow nature of Woodley and Thompson’s welterweight title rematch generated ample criticism from many notable members of the MMA community, including UFC President Dana White. Woodley, unsurprisingly, was not especially pleased with these comments from the UFC boss. The champ fired back at the UFC 209 post-fight press conference, defending his strategy in the fight, and challenging White to step into the cage and fight Thompson.

Dana White rips fighters looking for 'money fights'

Now, with the term being commonplace in the MMA world, with more and more fighters calling for ‘money fights’, UFC President Dana White has had enough. Friday afternoon, unfortunate news surfaced that UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov had been taken to the hospital. This report was promptly followed by another one which revealed that Khabib had been pulled from the fight. Unfortunately, with Nurmagomedov off the card, the UFC opted to also pull Tony Ferguson from the card, leaving fight fans with no co-main event. Since then, the promotion announced that Lando Vannata vs. David Teymur had been promoted to the co-main event.

Recently, UFC President Dana White and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley have continued to trade verbal blows in various interviews following controversial comments made by Woodley in regards to how he feels his race plays a role in popularity in MMA. Dana White wasn’t too pleased with Woodley’s comments, which resulted in the UFC President calling Woodley a “drama queen” in a recent interview. This then led to Woodley responding on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour, in which he stated:

Many fans were blown away when Dana White announced that light heavyweight prospect Misha Cirkunov was let go by the UFC. With a 13-2 professional record and going 4-0 in the UFC with all of his UFC wins being finishes, fans were left scratching their head on how the promotion could let go of such a promising fighter in the 205-pound division.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has made several bold claims leading up to his UFC 209 welterweight title fight with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson this Saturday. The most controversial being his claim that his lack of popularity is in-part due to his race, which he believes plays a role in why UFC flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson doesn’t receive the push he deserves from the UFC. That rant didn’t sit too well with UFC President Dana White, who called Woodley a “drama queen”:

Dana White gives update on Georges St-Pierre return

While it has been nearly five years since former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre stepped into the Octagon for his final fight, a welterweight title defense against Johny Hendricks, headlines regarding a potential Georges St-Pierre return have continued to surface. Most recently, all signs pointed to the former champ returning to the Octagon last year after reports began to surface that negotiations with the UFC had been going well after he and UFC President Dana White buried the hatchet. Unfortunately, while it looked as though St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping, the former champ took to social media to release a statement on why he would be unable to fight Bisping, saying:

In the wake of former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey being knocked out by Amanda Nunes in the very first round of their UFC 207 scrap back in the end of 2016, there has been much speculation as to whether or not former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will return to the Octagon for another attempt at reclaiming the women’s bantamweight championship. Recently however, UFC President Dana White revealed that Rousey likely wouldn’t be returning to the Octagon for another fight, and would look to explore other career opportunities, including her film career.
