Demetrious Johnson is Ready to Start Calling for "Money Fights"
Tom Taylor - September 13, 2016
Over the last few months, several UFC champions have caught flack for calling for money fights – that is, the fights that they believe will make them the most money, rather than the ones that make the most sense from a rankings standpoint. The most high-profile fighter to chase these fights is, of course, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who has contested his last two fights in the welterweight division, raking in multiple millions for a pair of grudge matches with Nate Diaz. Then there’s welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who has been chasing lucrative fights with Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz, while lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez is after a bout with Conor McGregor, and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has expressed interest in a super fight with interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Demetrious Johnson: After Four Years as UFC Champion, "I Can't Retire."
Tom Taylor - September 13, 2016
We’ve seen some huge paydays in MMA recently. Back in March, Conor McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to be paid $1 million dollars, flat-out. Months later, at UFC 200, Brock Lesnar more than doubled that record with a disclosed purse of $2.5 million. Then, in August, McGregor once again beat the record with a $3 million payday for his rematch with Nate Diaz, who took home $2 million – coincidentally the same amount Fedor Emelianenko has apparently been offered to fight for Rizin this December.
Flyweight Champ Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson is After Seven-Figure Paydays
Tom Taylor - September 2, 2016
While many UFC fighters are still severely underpaid, others are starting to rake in some seriously hefty paydays. At UFC 196, Conor McGregor became the first UFC fighter to make a disclosed $1 million for a fight. At UFC 200, WWE superstar Brock Lesnar blew past that record with a $2.5 million payday. At UFC 202, McGregor reclaimed the biggest payday record with a disclosed purse of $3 million, while his opponent Nate Diaz claimed a sizeable $2 million. Indeed, while most fighters still don’t make what they should, the precedent for big paydays now exists.
