EXCLUSIVE | Tyron Woodley “I don’t believe that fight was a draw. I think I won. So I am ready to move forward”
UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley joined host Chris Taylor on BJPENN.com’s Rapid Fire segment where he discussed his UFC 205 “fight of the night” title bout with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.
The epic five-round war between ‘T-Wood’ and ‘Wonderboy’ was declared a 47-47 draw by two of the three judges in attendance, with the third judge awarding ‘T-Wood’ the decision by a score of 48-47.
The end result, after some confusion between the commission and UFC announcer Bruce Buffer, was a majority decision draw.
Chris asked the champ if a rematch with ‘Wonderboy’ was likely next.
“You know I went back and looked at the film and I told myself you now ‘If I watch the third-round and think he won, then I won’t be against a rematch’. Because if he won third-round then it could be draw. Like 47-47. But, I watched it three or four times and I just cannot see how he won the third-round. Even the second and fifth, even those rounds were close. He landed just enough to get those rounds. But he never did any real damage. It was just his forward movement was perceived by the judges in a way that he was winning those rounds, even though he wasn’t landing. So I don’t feel that he won round three. That doesn’t mean I am against it (a rematch), that just means I don’t feel obligated to do it. I just don’t believe the fight was a draw. I think I won. So I am ready to move forward.”
He continued.
“Now hopefully a lot of the doubt will be gone and people will realize that I am the best welterweight in the world. People should start to recognize that I am here to stay and that I am a future legend in the sport and a future Hall of Famer. Who knows? Maybe I will go on to be the best welterweight of all-time. I beat Carlos Condit who was supposed to be, well before Thompson, the best striker at 170. I beat the beast that is Robbie Lawler. Nobody gave me chance in those fights. I keep proving them wrong and so it is like what else do I need to do? I do have a lot of fans coming up to me now or on social media saying I wasn’t a fan before but that ‘Wonderboy’ fight was awesome man. I really think you won that fight. Great stuff.”
