Frankie Edgar Discusses his Fighting Future: I’m Still Getting Better
Long before Conor McGregor’s history-making defeat of Eddie Alvarez, Tyron Woodley’s memorable draw with Stephen Thompson, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s domination of Karolina Kowalkiewicz occured on UFC 205’s main card, Frankie Edgar scored a much needed win over Jeremy Stephens on the undercard. Though Edgar was rattled by a second-round Stephens head kick, he was the better man throughout the rest of the fight, which ultimately earned him the judges’ favor.
With this win, Edgar bounced back from a July loss to Jose Aldo, and reasserted himself as one of the featherweight division’s top contenders. While his status as one of the best featherweight fighters on earth is irrefutable, however, it’s hard to say what the future holds for him.
Conor McGregor, who is the division’s undisputed champion, recently competed in his third fight outside the division. Jose Aldo, who became the interim featherweight champ when he defeated Edgar in July, is so disillusioned with the state of the UFC that he doesn’t want to fight anymore. Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis – two other featherweight contenders – are scheduled to scrap on December 10, and the winner of their fight should receive the next shot at McGregor or Aldo.
This, of course, leaves very few options for the talented Edgar.
In a recent interview with FloCombat.com, Edgar discussed the uncertainty of his fighting future. Though he’s not sure who he’ll enter the Octagon with next, he explained that he does have a date and location in mind for his next fight.
“There is so much unknown right now and I have no idea what is going to happen, so that’s not something I’m going to worry about,” Edgar said. “I’m going to let my body heal up a little bit, then I’d like to get back in there and stay active. There is an event in Brooklyn in February and that’s a card I’d like to get on but we’ll see. Fighting so close to home was awesome because it was a lot easier on myself and my team.”
Whether his next fight is in Brooklyn, or elsewhere, Edgar went on to assure that he’s still nowhere near the end of the road.
“This win [over Stephens] was a good way to end the year,” he said. “I had a hiccup back in the summer, but it was good to end the year with a win, and I’m looking forward to next year. I believe I’m still getting better and I certainly don’t feel 35. As long as these wheels are still turning I’m going to keep going.”
