Frankie Edgar shuts down Cub Swanson’s campaign for title shot

This past weekend, in the main event of UFC 212, UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo stepped into the Octagon in hopes of defending his new featherweight title for the first time. On the other hand, interim featherweight champion Max Holloway was looking to unify the two belts and capture the undisputed featherweight championship.

After weathering an early storm from Aldo in the first, Holloway began to find his rhythm in the second. In the third round, it took just two minutes for Holloway to drop Aldo with a big right cross. Ultimately, Holloway showcased his impressive ground game as he controlled Aldo on the ground, landing a barrage of ground and pound strikes before ultimately earning the 3rd round TKO victory, and claiming the undisputed featherweight championship.

Following the fight, Holloway appeared to hint at a fight with former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, stating that he would like to add a former champion to his list of fighters that he’s defeated. With that being said, UFC featherweight veteran Cub Swanson has been campaigning for a rematch with Holloway.

Edgar made his case for a title shot against Holloway on The MMA Hour, saying:

“The cards fell in my favor, so here we go, let’s set up Holloway vs. Edgar.”

While Holloway welcomed a fight with Frankie Edgar, nothing has been finalized according to the former champ. With that being said, Edgar believes Swanson shouldn’t be in talks of the next featherweight tittle shot:

“I just don’t see how he’s in consideration,” Edgar said. “Since me and Cub fought, I’ve fought nothing but Top 10, Top 5 guys and I don’t think he’s fought anybody in the Top 10 … and he’s also lost to Max. So I don’t see how that’s even a thing to even compare to. Cub’s a great fighter, but this is how it goes and you have to put yourself on the line every time … and I do that.”
