Georges St-Pierre: Size advantage won't help Bisping, it'll just be louder when he hits the floor

Tom Taylor - April 17, 2017

Later this year, at a to-be-determined date, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping will attempt to defend his title against the most unlikely of challengers – not Yoel Romero, not Robert Whittaker, not Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, but former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Though this fight is not yet scheduled – which is making Bisping increasingly ornery – the two fighters have not held back when it comes to trash talk. Even the typically reserved St-Pierre has hit Bisping with a few zingers.

bjpenndotcom - April 15, 2017

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is currently set to return to the Octagon sometime this year when he will fight Michael Bisping for the welterweight strap. While the fight doesn’t have an official date at the present time, St-Pierre spoke to RT to discuss his return, as well as his master plan. St-Pierre’s return is a particularly interesting one given the fact that he is moving up to middleweight after his successful welterweight title run many years ago.

Interestingly enough, St-Pierre posted a photo of himself at dinner with Nurmagomedov in Moscow while in town coaching one of his Tristar teammates in his upcoming MMA fight.

Although the UFC has yet to set an official date or event, Georges St-Pierre is scheduled to return to the Octagon after taking years off from competing in the UFC. The former UFC welterweight kingpin will be making his return going up a weight class to challenge UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Here we see a shirtless St-Pierre in the gym alongside Tristar teammate Yukinori Akazawa. St-Pierre has never competed in the UFC middleweight division but is looking to challenge the champion in Michael Bisping and make history by becoming the fourth fighter in UFC history to win two titles in two different UFC weight classes.

Yoel Romero reacts to the news that Michael Bisping won't wait for Georges St-Pierre

Tom Taylor - March 28, 2017

While news that Michael Bisping will next defend his UFC middleweight title against returning welterweight great Georges St-Pierre generated excitement among some members of the MMA community, it was an undeniable bummer for Yoel Romero. Romero, after all, is the top contender in the middleweight division, and St-Pierre’s surprising middleweight title shot deprives him of the shot he’s worked so hard to earn. Last night, however, the Cuban contender was given some cause for optimism, as Bisping suggested he was not willing to wait until the fall to fight St-Pierre, and that he is prepared to fight Romero in the meantime.

Luke Rockhold: Bisping vs. GSP fight is a joke

Tom Taylor - March 28, 2017

At a to-be-determined date later this year, former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will return from a long hiatus to challenge Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title. Given that St-Pierre has never fought at middleweight before, his being given this opportunity over deserving middleweight contenders like Yoel Romero and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has generated ample criticism. The latest of this criticism comes from former champion Luke Rockhold. On UFC Tonight Rockhold suggested that, while a champion should be able to pick their challengers out of a small pool of top-5 foes, picking a challenger who’s never fought in the division before is a bit excessive. Later this year, at a to-be-determined date, UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping will attempt to defend his title against former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre, who is returning from a long hiatus from competition. While this fight has got some members of the MMA community very excited, it’s generated criticism from others for the way it deprives the top middleweight contenders of the title shots they deserve. During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold offered his own criticism of this booking, suggesting that it could set a dangerous precedent, as legitimate ranking-driven matchmaking gives way to a focus on so-called “money fights”.

Alan Jouban on Georges St-Pierre: I think he sees Bisping as a more favorable fight than Tyron Woodley

Tom Taylor - March 16, 2017

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has signed a shiny new deal with the UFC, and is poised for a return to the Octagon later this year. His return, however, will not occur in the welterweight division he ruled for so long. Instead, he’ll return to a middleweight title shot against reigning divisional king Michael Bisping. Alan Jouban, who is quickly rising through the ranks at welterweight, thinks he knows why St-Pierre is returning to the Bisping-ruled middleweight division, rather than the welterweight division, which is now ruled by the dangerous Tyron Woodley. He believes that St-Pierre has probably not been training as hard as he says he has been, and that the former champ probably views Bisping as a much simpler puzzle to solve than Woodley.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has what is likely be the biggest fight of his life coming up as he is set to take on former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who returns to fight once again after taking over three years off from competition. Bisping last fought at UFC 204 back in October as he successfully defended his belt for the first time in his close rematch with MMA legend Dan Henderson. Following the fight, Bisping said that he needed some work done on his knee that would put him out of competition until likely the second quarter of 2017.

Demian Maia glad Georges St-Pierre is returning at middleweight

bjpenndotcom - March 14, 2017

This month, news surfaced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre had signed a new multi-fight UFC contract, and would be returning to the UFC for a middleweight showdown with UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping later this year. While top ranked UFC welterweight Demian Maia may currently be booked to fight Jorge Masvidal in a fight that many believe could potentially see Maia crowned the welterweight #1 contender, Maia is thankful that St-Pierre chose to return at middleweight, rather than cutting to the front of the line for a welterweight title shot.
