Jake Ellenberger recalls period of uncertainty regarding future with UFC
When Jake Ellenberger stepped into the Octagon to fight Matt Brown on the main card of UFC 201 last month, ‘The Juggernaut’ knew he was in a must-win situation. Ellenberger entered the bout on a 2-fight losing streak, going 1-4 in his last 5 fights.
Ellenberger put on a spectacular performance as he dropped Brown just seconds into the fight, ultimately finishing ‘The Immortal’ later in the round with a perfectly placed liver kick.
On a recent episode of the Three Amigos podcast, Ellenberer reflected on a period of uncertainty he had when he wasn’t sure whether or not the UFC would cut him.
“There was a long period of time where I was in limbo, not sure what’s gonna happen next. A couple months go by. That’s the direction they were going [to cut me]. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a relationship with Dana, and have been able to talk to him on the phone here and there. So I went to Vegas. I wanted to – I needed a face to face – and just to have a talk with him. He said of course so I came in and said ‘listen I know this isn’t how it ends. Give me one more opportunity and I’ll prove to you that I deserve to be where I’m at,’ and he said okay.”
“He knew I was serious. He knew I wasn’t just saying the words to get another fight.”
