Rose Namajunas is getting no love from the oddsmakers. The UFC strawweight champion, who is scheduled to defend her title against Jessica Andrade at UFC 237, opened as a +100 underdog (bet $100 to win $100) according to 5Dimes. Since then, the line has shot up even further, as Namajunas is sitting at a +135 underdog (bet $100 to win $135) with Andrade coming in at -165 (bet $165 to win $100).

When Nicco Montano was hospitalized ahead of her planned UFC 228 title fight with Valentina Shevchenko, the UFC began a frantic and ultimately unsuccessful search for a replacement opponent. While the promotion ultimately decided to pull Shevchenko from the card, strawweight contender Jessica Andrade says she offered to abandon her planned strawweight fight with Karolina Kowalkiewicz and battle Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title on short notice. “I even offered to fight for the belt if they agreed to, but since they had already weighed me and done all the work, I wasn’t allowed by the athletic commission,” Andrade said at the UFC 228 post-fight press conference (transcript via Sherdog). “But I’m happy I was able to help the promotion, help the UFC with a great show and excite people.”

Reports and rumors were circulating recently that the Rose Namajunas would be making her first title defense at UFC 221 in Australia…but not in a rematch with the woman she defeated for the title, Joanna Jedrzejczyk but the woman she’s 1-1 with, Tecia Torres. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the February 24 UFC on Fox 28 will be getting a big Strawweight fight between Torres and Jessica Andrade. Torres entered the UFC a part of The Ultimate Fighter season 20 and most recently defeated Michelle Waterson at UFC 218 by unanimous decision, extending her winning streak to three. Her last and only loss came to the champion, Rose Namajunas via split decision in a very close fight. Torres also holds a win over Namajunas from back when they fought in Invicta. A trilogy between the two happening was something that made most sense outside of Joanna getting a rematch. Well, either of those options or Jessica Andrade getting her second title shot.

Former title challenger Jessica Andrade compared her division’s reaction to a World Cup win. In a recent interview, she broke down how Namajunas did the unthinkable and wasted no time at all calling out the new champion. Things just got really interesting at women’s strawweight. “[Joanna Jedrzejczyk] definitely underestimated [Rose] Namajunas. She got in there as it was just another fight, that it would be easy. She was more aggressive, but she forgot that Namajunas is taller than her previous opponents, like me and Claudia [Gadelha], and has a bigger reach. That’s how Namajunas found the opening. Namajunas trained for that and did a great job. I was rooting for Namajunas to win. When I saw her going down the first time, I said ‘damn, this will be good.’ When Namajunas dropped her the second time and knocked her out, I said ‘I can’t believe it.’ It was like a World Cup game, you know? Everybody screaming and celebrating because it’s easier now for the division to move and we have another opportunity to fight for the belt again.”

After the absolute bloodbath of a fight between her and Claudia Gadelha, Jessica Andrade was pushed to the number one contender slot in the UFC strawweight rankings. It would have been a four-fight win streak for Andrade, had she not have fought Joanna Jedrzejczyk just before. However, that’s a rematch that is just within arm’s length for the young Brazilian. Another shot at that belt would get a lot closer if Jessica Andrade beats third-ranked former title challenger, Karolina Kowalkiewicz. “I was expecting more of Karolina [Kowalkiewicz]. I expected her to knock [Esquibel] out, something like that. Her opponent had just gotten into the UFC and she was in the top five. She should have shown more spirit to finish the fight. I think it would be a really good fight [with me and Kowalkiewicz]. That’s what I’m after: tough fights. My goal is to fight those who are at the top to get a chance to fight for the belt. Karolina is a good choice. She was not hurt. She might be able to fight again soon.”
