Dana White reveals that the UFC was working on a Jon Jones super fight for UFC 218

Chris Taylor - August 22, 2017

Terrible news struck the mixed martial arts world this evening when TMZ Sports reported that current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones had been flagged by USADA for a potential anti-doping violation. The Anti-Doping Policy violation in question stemmed from an in-competition sample collected following Jones’ weigh-in for UFC 214 on July 28, 2017.

MMA community reacts to news of Jon Jones' failed drug test

Tom Taylor - August 22, 2017

It sucks, but it’s true. Jon Jones failed a drug test in the buildup to UFC 214, and all signs point to his being stripped of the UFC light heavyweight title in the coming hours. “The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Jon Jones of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected following his weigh-in on July 28, 2017,” the UFC confirmed in a statement posted to UFC.com.

Alexander Gustafsson denies reports of Jon Jones fight

Tom Taylor - August 21, 2017

Earlier today, Swedish MMA publication MMANytt reported that a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson was in the works for UFC 218, which is scheduled for December 2 in Detroit, Michigan. Apparently, however, this report is inaccurate. Speaking to Kimura.se, another Swedish publication, Gustafsson revealed that he currently camping with his friends, and that he’s not a part of any discussions regarding a fight with Jones at the moment.

Daniel Cormier breaks his silence: 'It might mean too much'

Russell Ess - August 14, 2017

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has not been heard from much since losing the belt to Jon Jones at UFC 214. Cormier was controversially interviewed in the Octagon by Joe Rogan and released a short statement on social media after the loss. However, on Monday, Cormier joined Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour and gave his first interview since UFC 214 and opened up on how he was feeling.

Coach defends Jon Jones' reluctance to fight Stipe Miocic

Tom Taylor - August 14, 2017

Over the last few weeks, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has expressed interest in a big-ticket money fight with former UFC heavyweight champ and WWE megastar Brock Lesnar. At the same time, Jones explained that a fight with Stipe Miocic, the actual heavyweight champ, doesn’t interest him quite as much: “I feel like if I was to take a fight at heavyweight, it would be against a person who I felt, and my coaches felt would be a perfect matchup for me,” Jon Jones said at the UFC 214 post-fight presser. “Right now Stipe (Miocic) is looking extremely impressive and I believe when you get an extremely talented big guy versus and extremely talented little guy, the cards are working in his favor. At the same time, I fear no man. But, I strike for a reason when I strike and I feel like right now Stipe is relatively unknown to the general public. So it wouldn’t be a real super-fight in my opinion. I feel like the MMA fans would be really excited about it. But the general public wouldn’t care about that fight. Most people really don’t know who he (Miocic) is, with all due respect to him. So if I am going to sacrifice being the smaller guy, I think that stylistically Brock Lesnar would be a fight that makes way more sense. And the payday would be tremendous! Plus what it would do for our sport would be tremendous. It would have a much greater effect (than a fight with Miocic). So for those reasons, a Brock Lesnar fight just makes way more sense for me.”

Mark Hunt Bashes 'Biggest Cheaters in the World' Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar

Justin Golightly - August 11, 2017

It is no secret that “The Super Samoan” Mark Hunt is not a fan of current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar. The former heavyweight title challenger has ripped “The Beast” for pretty months following their fight in July of 2016. Hunt was defeated by the former UFC heavyweight champion at UFC 200 via unanimous decision. However, that bout was later overturned to a no-contest after it was revealed that Brock had tested positive for Clomiphene. Lesnar, who returned to the WWE following his scrap with Hunt, recently found his way back into mixed martial arts headlines. Or, should we say forced back into the MMA media world? All it took was a single answer on Jon Jones’ Facebook live to spark talk of a super fight between Jones and Lesnar. The fight has garnered some mixed reactions, but overall there seems to be a lot of excitement surrounding the potential scrap. Not from Mark Hunt though, who flamethrowed both of their names on Mike Swick’s “Quick Swick” podcast.

Jon Jones sustained an injury before his UFC 214 fight with Daniel Cormier

Tom Taylor - August 10, 2017

Late last month, in the main event of the stacked UFC 214, Jon Jones reclaimed the UFC light heavyweight title with a third-round knockout of his arch rival Daniel Cormier. It was a feel-good moment for the MMA great. It was, of course, one that could have occurred much sooner, as he and Cormier were scheduled to rematch twice previously to no avail. As it turns out, their long-awaited rematch very nearly failed to occur at UFC 214 too. Speaking to FloCombat.com, Jones’s striking coach Mike Winkeljohn explained that the fighter sustained an injury just days out from his fight with Cormier.

Tom Taylor - August 10, 2017

Shortly after his UFC 214 defeat of Daniel Cormier, which earned him the UFC light heavyweight title, Jon Jones began doubling down on his calls for a fight with former UFC heavyweight champ and long-time WWE superstar Brock Lesnar. “Man, it would be like a modern day David and Goliath situation,” Jones recently told Sway in the Morning of a potential battle with Lesnar. “This guy is a freak athlete. NCAA national wrestling champion. I mean he’s built like – he’s such a special athlete. I think a lot of people would assume that I would lose that fight and when you get an argument like that where people really don’t know who is going to win, that’s when the money is created. That’s when you get the main stream, general public wanting to tune into this freak show, right? The little guy versus this monster.”

Jon Jones discusses how he felt watching Daniel Cormier cry at UFC 214

Chris Taylor - August 9, 2017

The feud between UFC light heavyweight fighters Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier resulted in arguably the biggest rivalry in the history of mixed martial arts. That rivalry came to a head in the main event of last month’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim, where Jones defeated his bitter rival (Cormier) via third-round knockout, thus reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight title which he had never really lost.

New York's Jon Jones is willing to rematch Alexander Gustafsson – but not in New York

Tom Taylor - August 9, 2017

Jon Jones is once again the UFC light heavyweight champion. The MMA great and pound-for-pound stalwart reclaimed the throne in late July, when he removed Daniel Cormier’s batteries with a third-round kick to the head. This win marked Jones’ successful return after a long stretch on the shelf. During his hiatus, MMA was finally legalized in his home state of New York, while the UFC made its long-awaited debut in New York City. As a New Yorker, you might expect Jones to be eager to fight in the state, perhaps even as a part of UFC 217, which is scheduled for November 4 inside New York City’s hallowed Madison Square Garden. Apparently, however, this is not the case.

Stipe Miocic has a message for Jon Jones

Tom Taylor - August 8, 2017

In the buildup to and immediate fallout of his UFC 214 title fight with Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones has expressed real interest in a fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. The reason for this callout of Lesnar, Jones explained, is because he believes a fight with a superstar with Lesnar at heavyweight would be even more lucrative than a fight with reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. “I feel like if I was going to take a fight at heavyweight it would be against a person who me and my coaches feel would be a perfect matchup for me,” Jones told the media at the UFC 214 post fight press conference. “Right now, Stipe is looking extremely impressive. And I believe if you get an extremely talented big guy versus an extremely talented little guy, I mean, a lot of the cards are in his favor. At the same time, I fear no man. I strike for a reason when I strike.”

Jon Jones explains why he had kind things to say about Daniel Cormier after beating him at UFC 214

Russell Ess - August 7, 2017

Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier have had one of the most bitter rivalries that the UFC has ever seen. However, following their second time fighting in the Octagon at UFC 214, Jones had his hand raised again winning both of their fights. Although a tough pill to swallow, Cormier had to admit in his post-fight Octagon interview that their rivalry was likely now just a thing of the past. Prior to Cormier having to come to terms with the idea that their rivalry was over, Jones took to the mic in the Octagon after knocking Cormier out in the third round of their rematch and had very kind things to say about his opponent. “Bones” made an appearance on Monday’s episode of “Good Morning America” and was asked by Michael Strahan on giving Cormier respect after everything they have been through.

bjpenndotcom - August 5, 2017

We all go thru it. Then raise the People's eyebrow. When life gets tough, you get knocked down and you're going "thru the sludge".. you gotta have faith that if you just keep pushing thru it, on the other side is something greater. Proud of and inspired by my guy @jonnybones for keeping the faith, pushing thru the sludge, rising up again to be a greater man and becoming new @UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the world. When we hugged after the fights he put his UFC title on my shoulder.. a beautiful gesture that I appreciate, but I respectfully gave it back because he's earned it… and the thought of me getting punched in the face in the octagon makes me want to just go eat waffles. Congratulations champ to you, your family and Team Jones. #ItsNeverOver 👊🏾💪🏾 A post shared by therock (@therock) on Aug 4, 2017 at 7:59am PDT

The UFC rankings have been updated following UFC 214 and Jon Jones is once again the #1 pound-for-pound king after reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight title from Daniel Cormier in their main event fight. Jones finished Cormier in the third round by KO. Cris Cyborg also won UFC gold in her first UFC title fight for the vacant women’s featherweight title beating Tonya Evinger in the third round by TKO. Cyborg also made her way on to the pound-for-pound rankings coming in at #13 and will look to climb those ranks as the women’s featherweight division comes evolves.
