Jorge Masvidal's manager denies that UFC offered fight against Leon Edwards

Adam Martin - August 9, 2019

The manager of Jorge Masvidal says that his client has never been offered a fight against Leon Edwards despite reports saying he turned it down. Edwards said an interview this week that the UFC offered him a fight against Masvidal and that he accepted it, yet Edwards claims Masvidal turned the fight down. UFC president Dana White said earlier this week that Colby Covington would get the next title shot against Kamaru Usman, and said the promotion would offer Masvidal another opponent, which most assumed to be Edwards.

Leon Edwards claims Jorge Masvidal turned down fight with him

Tom Taylor - August 8, 2019

Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal are two of the top contenders in the UFC welterweight division. As luck would have it, they also happen to be two of the most heated rivals in the division. As of yet, however, the pair have not yet had the opportunity to settle their differences in the cage.

Kamaru Usman says Leon Edwards is 'dark horse' to get next title shot

Cole Shelton - August 7, 2019

Kamaru Usman’s first title defense is far from official. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ captured the UFC’s coveted welterweight strap this past March, defeating Tyron Woodley via unanimous decision. After Colby Covington beat Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC Newark, UFC president, Dana White said “Chaos” was next for the title shot. Yet, that may not be the case anymore. According to Usman, Leon Edwards is a dark horse and could very well get the next title shot.

Michael Bisping says Jorge Masvidal isn't scared to fight Leon Edwards

Fernando Quiles - July 27, 2019

Michael Bisping doesn’t believe Jorge Masvidal is ducking Leon Edwards in fear. The consensus on a potential welterweight clash between Masvidal and Edwards appears to be split. One side believes that the bout makes sense as the two were involved in a backstage incident back in March that saw Masvidal lay hands on Edwards, causing a cut under his eye. The other side believes that Masvidal’s stock has soared beyond the grudge match and he should be fighting for the 170-pound gold next.

Leon Edwards believes Jorge Masvidal is making excuses not to fight him

Cole Shelton - July 23, 2019

Ever since Jorge Masvidal gave Leon Edwards the ‘three-piece and a soda‘ the Englishman has wanted an actual fight with “Gamebred”. However, despite both men winning their respective bouts at UFC London, they were not matched up by the organization. Instead, “Gamebred” fought Ben Askren, and “Rocky” took on Rafael dos Anjos. Now that they both men have once again proved victorious, and are currently ranked 3rd and 4th in the division, pairing them up together seems to make a lot of sense. But, according to Edwards, Masvidal is making excuses to avoid the fight.

Leon Edwards argues Jorge Masvidal doesn't deserve title shot

Tom Taylor - July 17, 2019

When Jorge Masvidal knocked former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren out in five seconds at UFC 239, he cemented himself as one of the top contenders in the UFC welterweight division — perhaps even the top contender outright. Yet rising British contender Leon Edwards, who fights Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC San Antonio this weekend, doesn’t believe Masvidal has earned a title shot just yet. “I never held Askren in high regard anyway,” Edwards told MMA Fighting, downplaying Masvidal’s victory. “He just shouted his mouth off the get to where he’s at. He’s an amateur on the feet, I’ve watched him hit pads and it’s weird; even his shots are slow. He came in, he talked his way up into the position he was in and then he dipped his head into a knee.

In fact, the pair recently came to blows outside the cage, when Masvidal mounted an attack on his British rival backstage at UFC London. Despite the heat between them, Edwards and Masvidal still haven’t been scheduled to fight each other. Instead, Edwards is scheduled to battle Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC San Antonio, while Masvidal will fight Ben Askren at UFC 239 this weekend in Las Vegas.

Tom Taylor - May 27, 2019

Leon Edwards is currently 7-fight win-streak in the stacked UFC welterweight division, but he still hasn’t managed to crack the division’s top-10 rankings. He’s hoping that changes sometime soon. Speaking on his Twitter account over the weekend, a visibly frustrated Edwards called for a top-5 opponent in his next outing.

Leon Edwards says Jorge Masvidal turned down fight with him

Natasha Hooper - May 22, 2019

According to Leon Edwards and his brother, Bellator fight Fabian Edwards, Jorge Masvidal turned down the opportunity to fight him. The Edwards brothers have also recently made digs at the UFC for the current ranking and lack of hype surrounding Leon. Leon Edwards (17-3) has made his desire to fight Jorge Masvidal no secret. In a recent interview with BJPenn.com, he says his winning streak is not reflected in his position in the UFC ranking system, presumably because he doesn’t engage in trash talking.
