Mark Hunt plans to sue Alistair Overeem personally if he fails drug test
Last month, the UFC announced a thrilling heavyweight matchup between former UFC heavyweight title challenger Alistair Overeem and heavyweight MMA legend Mark Hunt for UFC 209 on March 4th.
While the MMA community was quick to express their excitement over the matchup, Hunt was quick to shut down the reports as he explained that the fight was offered to him, however the UFC was unwilling to put a clause in his contract that protected him from once again stepping into the Octagon against an opponent who was using PEDs. When the UFC didn’t cooperate with Hunt in regards to putting a provision in contracts, Hunt took to social media to attempt to negotiate with Overeem directly.

While there has been no official word yet, Hunt posted a photo on social media promoting the bout. Shortly after, he spoke in an interview with Stuff.co.nz about the fight, saying:
“I’m not young, I’m 42 years old. In six months I’ve already missed out on a couple of fights, I’ve already missed out on a couple million dollars. At the end of the day I’ve stuck to my word. I’ve got no option, I’m in a contract that I can’t get out of. I had no other option. I can’t work anywhere else so what am I supposed to do, let my family starve? Every fighter I fight, if he gets caught through the process then I’ll sue him personally. If I don’t get help from the company I’ll do it myself. They (dopers) should be struck from the records and taken everything off them. They don’t deserve to get a cent. This sport is already harsh enough as it is. When you add in steroid use it makes it even worse.”
Hunt’s UFC 200 loss to Lesnar was overturned to a no-contest after it was revealed that Lesnar had failed not only a fight night drug test, but also a random out-of-competition drug test before the fight. When he steps into the Octagon against Alistair Overeem at UFC 209, he will have the opportunity to return to the win column.
The fight between Hunt and Overeem would of course serve as a rematch of their 2008 scrap under the DREAM banner, where Hunt was submitted in the first round.
