Nate Diaz well on his way to acquiring boxing license in Nevada

Nate Diaz is well on his way to acquiring a boxing license in the state of Nevada. According to ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto, who spoke with Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Bob Bennett, Diaz has been working toward this end for several months. Having paid the $50,000 fine he was handed by the NSAC last month, which stemmed from a bottle-throwing skirmish with Conor McGregor at a UFC 202 press conference, he is now filing the required paperwork to obtain this license. He has also submitted submitted footage of his gym’s boxing training for the commission to look over.

2016 was a big year for MMA veteran Nate Diaz as he defeated Conor McGregor at UFC 196 on just two weeks notice. Following the incredible win over McGregor, Diaz once again stepped into the Octagon with the Irish superstar at UFC 202 in August, where the pair fought to a majority decision. Ultimately, McGregor was awarded the win, however the fight was an extremely close one, with many praising Diaz for the fight.

His submission win marked the end of a 15-fight win-streak for the Irishman. Given his long-time dominance, and his status as the UFC’s biggest and most valuable star, McGregor was quickly given a shot at redemption against Diaz. Though his rematch was briefly scheduled as the main event of July’s UFC 200, it ultimately occurred a month later, atop UFC 202 in August. When it finally did occur, McGregor would defeat Diaz in a thrilling and competitive fight, nabbing a majority decision win and evening their score as he did.

UFC superstar Nate Diaz has been absent from the Octagon since his UFC 202 main event scrap with Conor McGregor back in August. Following the fight, Diaz revealed that the only way he would return to the Octagon would be for a massive payday. Since then, there has been no further word on when Diaz will be returning to the Octagon, however following the recent news of Conor McGregor being granted his boxing license in California, Diaz revealed his intentions to leave MMA to pursue professional boxing:

Nate Diaz was served a stiff punishment from the Nevada Athletic Commission on Thursday. According to the NAC documents reported by MMA Fighting, Diaz was served a $50,000 fine and ordered to do 50 hours of community service for the water bottle throwing incident at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference. Diaz and the commission on behalf of NAC executive director Bob Bennett agreed to the punishment.

When Conor McGregor tapped to a Nate Diaz rear-naked choke in March of this year, it influenced him to make a complete overhaul of his camp. Part of this overhaul was the introduction of BJJ star Dillon Danis to his roster of training partners. Danis would become an instrumental part of McGregor’s training for his rematch with Diaz – a fight he would win with a hard-fought majority decision. In the buildup to this rematch with Diaz, Danis fielded many questions about a possible jump to MMA – especially when he himself exchanged a few words with Diaz. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Danis confirmed with host Ariel Helwani that an MMA career is still very much a part of his plan, and that a fight with Diaz is still a possibility that interests him.
