Jimmie Rivera sounds off on Dominick Cruz: Defend your spot or get out of the way

Last night, in the first bout of the UFC Long Island main card, streaking bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera stepped into the cage with venomous Brazilian striker Thomas Almeida. After three fun rounds of fighting, Rivera was awarded a unanimous decision win. With this outcome, he improved to an incredible 21-1, and further cemented himself as one of the bantamweight division’s premier contenders. With this win in the rear-view, Rivera set his sights on either TJ Dillashaw, who was scheduled for a UFC 213 title fight with reigning champ Cody Garbrandt until Garbrandt withdrew with an injury, and former champion Dominick Cruz.

September's UFC Pittsburgh gets five new fights

Over the weekend, we learned that the UFC’s September 16 return to Pittsburgh, PA, will be headlined by a middleweight clash between former Strikeforce and UFC champ Luke Rockhold and former two-division World Series of Fighting champ David Branch. Since then, the promotion has confirmed five more fights for this anticipated UFC Pittsburgh card. The most high profile of these newly announced matchups will occur at middleweight, just like the main event. This fight will pit flashy striking specialist Uriah Hall against Polish powerhouse Krzysztof Jotko.

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather’s August 26 mega fight has fans split down the middle. There are those who believe wholeheartedly that Mayweather will be too much for the inexperienced Irishman in the boxing ring, and others that are confident that McGregor can defy the odds and prove his doubters wrong once again. For the most part, interactions between these two factions of fight fans have been pretty civil, limited to social media debates and the like. Jorge Masvidal doesn’t like UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. When Bisping ripped up a Cuban flag during Yoel Romero’s UFC 213 fight with Robert Whittaker – a flag Masvidal also calls his own – Masvidal’s dislike for the middleweight king ballooned even bigger. Apparently, however, his distaste for the champ is older than most fans would guess. Jorge Masvidal recounted his longstanding dislike for Bisping on the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio.

The bitter rivals, Cormier and Jones, first met at UFC 182 in January of 2015 with “Bones” emerging victorious by way of unanimous decision.

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman snapped his three-fight losing skid last night in New York, defeating surging contender Kelvin Gastelum via third-round submission (arm triangle choke) in the main event of UFC on FOX 25. The 25-year-old, Gastelum, did have his moments in the fight including a first-round knockdown of the “All American” after he caught Weidman with a beautiful left hand.

The victory snapped a three-fight losing skid for the “All American”, as Weidman had previously suffered knockout losses to Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi respectively.

Kelvin Gastelum (13-3, 1 no-contest) suffered a third-round submission loss to former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC on FOX 25 last night on Long Island, New York. The setback snapped Gastelum’s impressive three-fight win streak, which had seen Kelvin score TKO victories over Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort, as well as a decision win over former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

A key middleweight scrap between former division champion Chris Weidman and surging contender Kelvin Gastelum served as the main event of tonight’s UFC on FOX 25 fight card from Long Island, New York. Round one begins and Weidman looks absolutely huge compared to Kelvin. Gastelum takes the center of the octagon. Weidman throws a high kick but it is blocked with ease by Kelvin. A straight right hand finds a home for Weidman. He follows that up with a front kick to the body. Gastelum with a left hook that misses and Weidman scores a nice right hand. Chris shoots in and scores an easy takedown. He works a couple of short shots before Kelvin stands back up. Weidman drags Kelvin back to the floor and winds up in side control. Weidman begins working for a kimura but when he tries to extend the arm Kelvin is able to scramble back up to his feet. Kelvin partially lands a head kick. He seems to have gained some confidence now. He lands a right hook and then a straight left that floors Weidman. He hops on him with ground and pound before the horn sounds to end round one.

Round one begins and Dennis begins with a flying knee attempt that misses. Good low kicks from both fighters. Bermudez presses forward and attempts to clinch. Elkins shakes him off and circles out. Bermudez with a left hand and then charges forward with a combination. Bermudez with a hard low kick and then another. He slips and Elkins quickly hops on him and takes his back. Dennis is able to stand up but Darren is still all over him. Finally, Bermudez shakes him off and then immediately charges forward with a superman punch. Elkins shoots in and gets a takedown. He immediately transitions to the back of Bermudez. He locks in a body triangle and begins searching for a rear-naked choke. Bermudez scrambles and stands back up. He throws a spinning back elbow that lands and forced Elkins to let go. Dennis charges forward with strikes. Darren ducks under and scores another takedown. Dennis quickly scrambles and gets back to his feet. Round one comes to an end. Round two begins and Bermudez starts off quickly. He lands a nice punch followed by a low kick. Another good shots from Dennis finds a home. Darren shoots in and presses Dennis against the cage. He lands a couple of knees. Dennis breaks free and circles off the fence. He lands a nice straight right to the face of Elkins. Bermudez moving well here. He lands a low kick and then shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown. Dennis with a couple of shots before Elkins scrambles and gets back up to his feet. Bermudez with a nice left hand and then shoots in for a single leg. He cannot secure the takedown and opts to throw a knee. Elkins locks in a guillotine choke. He begins working some knees. He drags Dennis to the floor and attempts to take his back. Bermudez scrambles and gets back to his feet. He slips and the horn sounds to end round two.

UFC on FOX 25 Results: Patrick Cummins defeats Gian Villante

Round one begins and Cummins quickly presses the action and forces Gian against the fence. Villante breaks free and Cummins quickly presses forward with another shot. Villante defends and lands some big hammer fists. The fighters break and Gian lands a big right hand. Another right hand from Villante and Patrick is hurt. Another big right hand from Villante and Cummins is in all sorts of trouble. Patrick shoots in for a takedown but it is not there. The referee steps in as cut was caused on the head of Cummins after an accidental head butt. We continue and Cummins shoots in for a takedown. It is not there. He circles and lands a nice left hook. A nice jab now from Cummins. He shoots in for a takedown but the shot is defended by Villante. Cummins presses forward and pushes Gian against the cage. He works in a nice right hook. Cummins with some knees in the clinch now. They break and Cummins lands a left hand. Villante with a right jab but Cummins ducks under and presses him up against the fence. Round one comes to an end. Round two begins and Cummins is busted up but continues to press forward. He shoots in for a takedown but Villante defends. Cummins is working his left jab and hook well here. He is arguably out striking Gian now. Cummins presses forward and pushes Gian against the cage. He lands a couple of shots inside before they break. Cummins presses forward with a combination. He connects with a nice left hook. Gian responds with a good right. Another nice combo from Cummins. Villante circles and lands a low kick. Cummins shoots in and pushes Gian against the cage. He lands a left hand and Villante circles away. Round two comes to an end.

A scrap between Lyman Good and Elizeu Zaleski Dos Santos served as the featured bout of tonight’s UFC on FOX 25 prelims from Long Island, New York. Round one begins and Good presses forward with a body kick. Dos Santos catches it and takes Good down to the floor. Lyman pops right back up to his feet but Dos Santos moves to take his back. Good scrambles free from that position but Elizeu presses him up against the cage. Good breaks free and lands a nice knee inside. He comes forward with a high kick that is blocked by Dos Santos. Elizeu lands a pair of nice low kick. Lyman just eats those and presses forward. Good punches now from Good. He is applying all kinds of pressure here. A big right hand lands for Good. Dos Santos answers with a combination. Elizeu just misses with a front kick. Lyman presses forward and lands a nice right hand followed by a left. Dos Santos circles and fires back with a leg kick. Good attempts to go upstairs with a kick but does not connect. Round one comes to an end.

A middleweight scrap between Rafael Natal and Eryk Anders took place on tonight’s UFC on FOX 25 prelims from Long Island, New York. Round one begins and Natal lands an inside low kick to get things started. He circles and then lands a kick to the body. Anders is pressing forward here. Natal catches him with a counter right hand. He follows that up with a body kick. Anders with a right jab. He follows that up with a left hook and then another. He pushes Natal against the cage and lands another left. Natal survives the onslaught and circles out. Rafael with a left hand. Anderson presses forward and lands a high kick. He follows that up with a left hand that sends Natal staggering across the octagon. He jumps on top of Natal and begins raining down some ground and pound. Natal scrambles back to his feet. He leaps in with a left. Anders returns fire with a left of his own. Another massive left hook from Anders and Natal is sent falling face first to the canvas. This one is all over. Wow. That is some serious power from Anders. Keep an eye out for this undefeated prospect.
