Late last year, popular lightweight and welterweight prospect Sage Northcutt took the internet by storm with a video that showed him ripping an apple in half with his bare hands. After brutalizing this helpless fruit, he then challenged his fans to attempt to do so themselves. From there, Instagram blew up with videos of fans attempting to rip apples in half – some successfully, others not – in what quickly became known as the Super Sage Apple Challenge. The Internet is a strange and magical place.
Not long thereafter, Sage Northcutt made his anticipated return to the Octagon. He did so against welterweight prospect Micky Gall, who burst into the limelight with a first round mauling of pro wrestler CM Punk earlier in the year. Despite being far more experienced than Gall, Northcutt ultimately came up short, succumbing to a rear naked choke in the second round of the fight.
In the wake of this loss, Northcutt’s apple challenge seemed to die down a bit. In a recent interview with Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole of Fox Sports, however, this internet sensation came roaring back, as Northcutt was challenged to take on several other titans of the fruit world.
His first opponent in this segment, which you can watch in the video above, was a helpless banana, which he ripped in half with terrifying ease. Next up, Northcutt took on the citrus family, crushing an orange with one hand in a truly gory display. Then, he tore into a pear, which put up more of a fight than he expected. And finally, the young fighter took on a pineapple – a fruit whose tenacity is rivalled by the durian – but not before removing his shirt.
Prior to to his loss to Gall, Northcutt defeated Spain’s Enrique Marin by unanimous decision. Before that, he was handed the first loss of his career by the unheralded Bryan Barberena. The prospect is now 8-2 overall.
