Later this year, the UFC will have its historic inaugural event in New York when they hit the Madison Square Garden for UFC 205 on November 12th. The event is expected to play host to several high profile matchups including at least one title fight. While there has been no official word yet on a fight which was expected to be between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez, UFC President Dana White has recently stated that it will be Khabib Nurmagomedov who gets the title shot against Alvarez.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has had a bit of a rough time since becoming UFC welterweight champion. Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201 in July, however according to ‘The Chosen One’ he hasn’t been celebrated as a champion. After winning the belt, Woodley revealed in an interview that racist fans had emerged and were frequently making racist comments to him on social media.

When Woodley stole Lawler’s title with a blistering, first-round KO, however, Thompson’s future became far less clear. Immediately after the win, Woodley began expressing his interest in welterweight “money fights” with superstars like Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. At the same time, he expressed a complete disinterest in Thompson being his first title challenger. Even when the ever-courteous Thompson tried his hand at trash-talk, saying Woodley seemed “scared,” the champ wouldn’t budge.

The news came after a period of uncertainty following Woodley’s UFC 201 knockout win over Robbie Lawler at the end of last month. Following the win, Woodley shut Thompson down on the FS1 post-fight show, calling for a fight against Georges St-Pierre or Nick Diaz instead.
