Donald Cerrone says he is no longer chasing Conor McGregor fight
Donald Cerrone will be taking on Al Iaquinta in the headliner of this weekend’s UFC Ottawa event.
While Iaquinta has proven to be a top contender in the 155-pound division, a fight with ‘Raging Al’ wasn’t exactly what Cerrone had planned following his most recent win.
After ‘Cowboy’ beat Alexander Hernandez at UFC Brooklyn, the expectation was that Cerrone would fight Conor McGregor next, presumably in the summer.
Now, after negotiations for a potential fight with ‘The Notorious’ fell through, ‘Cowboy’ claims he is no longer chasing that fight.
“The chase is over,” Cerrone told MMA Junkie. “It’s done.”
Due to McGregor’s unpredictability, Cerrone decided it was best to move on.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to wait,’” he said. “‘Let’s go.’”
Instead of McGregor, Cerrone is taking on Iaquinta in a fight that should bring fireworks. ‘Cowboy’ understands just how tough Iaquinta is, given he went the distance with Khabib Nurmagomedov and then beat Kevin Lee by decision. There is no doubt this will be a hard fight for Cerrone but he is confident he has what it takes to win.
If he does win the fight, talks of a potential McGregor fight will most likely come up again. The former champ-champ is no longer suspended and has been active on social media saying he will return soon. The fight would make sense given the winner would be in prime position for a title shot. But, ‘Cowboy’ is no longer waiting around for the fight and if it happens it happens.
“Who knows, man,” he said. “I’ll take it if it does, of course. If not, we’ll take whoever’s next. I love my job. I love fighting.”
