Floyd Mayweather: ‘My way, my rules’ for potential fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov
Floyd Mayweather vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov could still happen.
If the fight between the undefeated boxer and undefeated mixed martial artist does happen, well, the rules would seem to be quite simple. Mayweather believes the fight has to be inside the boxing ring, just like his fight with Conor McGregor in August of 2017.
Nurmagomedov first floated the idea of a fight between him and Mayweather following his win at UFC 229 over the aforementioned McGregor.
“They came to me talking about the Khabib fight,” Mayweather said to TMZ Sports. “Khabib called me out, I didn’t call Khabib out. They said it has to happen in the Octagon and I said, ‘You just tell me where Khabib has made nine figures before in the Octagon. If he hasn’t made nine figures, he’s not the A side. I’m the A side, so if you guys want the fight to happen, you must come my way. My way, my rules.”
There is no question that the fight would almost certainly be a boxing match. Mayweather has little interest in fighting inside the Octagon and can simply dominate the fight if it is under the boxing ruleset. However, that would take a lot of the intrigue out of the fight, as the grappling sensation Nurmagomedov would be deprived of his best weapons.
If this fight does happen, it won’t be for awhile, given that Mayweather is reportedly set to fight under the Rizin banner on New Year’s Eve. Nurmagomedov is also still currently suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, meaning he can’t fight on North American soil until his punishment is handed down.
And from the sounds of it, Floyd Mayweather is in no rush to make it happen.
“Has to [be boxing],” he concluded. “My way, my rules. I’m Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Even if it don’t happen, I’m comfortable. I’ve got a great life. Houses all over L.A. I’m retired and I’m still living a great life.”
