Team Mayweather responds to recent comments from Conor McGregor

Earlier this month, in an interview with motivational speaker Tony Robbins, former two-division UFC champ Conor McGregor looked back on his 2017 boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The Irish MMA star explained how Mayweather’s mid-fight strategy change affected him, and called for a rematch with the boxer.

“I would love another go in the boxing arena,” Conor McGregor said. “Floyd is known for his Philly-shell defensive style of fighting. He has his right arm tucked in, or he’s orthodox so it’s the opposite, but he has one arm tucked in by his belly and one arm kept up by his ear. He uses his shoulder to deflect shots. He’s a back footed fighter, he fights on the back foot.

“That’s what I prepared for because that is all I had seen of him. My sparring partners were fighters on the back fight, fighting defensive, back against the ropes and then when I went into the fight in the early rounds, I was whooping him in the early rounds. I actually went back to my corner after the first round and said ‘this is easy’. I literally said that to my corner man, this is easy and then he had to switch up his style.”

“I believe I would win,” he said concluded. “Actually, there I go again with the fake humbleness — I know I would win.”

Mayweather CEO Leonard Ellerbe has now responded to these comments from Conor McGregor. Here’s what he had to say:

“That’s interesting. I hadn’t heard that but Conor McGregor knows he’s always welcome to that ass-whooping,” Ellerbe told TMZ Sports (transcript via MMA Fighting). “I have the utmost respect for Conor, Dana, and those guys. If Conor McGregor wants some of that smoke again, he knows what he’s got to do.

“He knows what he’s got to do,” Ellerbe continued. “All he’s got to do is call Dana. That’s all he has to do. I can’t speak for Floyd but I’ll tell you what, Conor McGregor, if he wants that ass-whooping again, I’m sure Floyd would oblige to that.”
