VIDEO | Nate Diaz breaks down potential Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight

By Tom Taylor - March 8, 2017

These days, the possibility of a boxing mega fight between semi-retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is dominating combat sports headlines. Each week, we’re given new reasons to believe the fight is just a few signatures away, and plenty of other reasons to believe it’s a near impossibility.

Whether you believe this Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match will happen or not, however, you probably have an opinion on the outcome of this potential fight. Nate Diaz – who is arguably more familiar with McGregor than any fighter on earth thanks to their two memorable 2016 battles – certainly  has an opinion.

In a recent appearance on CSN, the Stockton, California native weighed in on this prospective showdown, and unsurprisingly, he’s not giving his Irish rival much of a chance in a boxing match with Mayweather.

“I’m going to say [McGregor] has got a puncher’s chance, if anything,” Diaz said. “As far as skill and technique, he’s got an amateur style. Anybody can be good for six, seven minutes, anybody, and they all have that puncher’s chance. But [Mayweather] is ready to go round after round, and he’s going to be a hard person to get a hold of, so I think it’s going to be a rough one [for McGregor].

Diaz has not been seen in the cage since his second scrap with McGregor, which occurred in August and saw him lose via competitive, majority decision. His next most recent fight saw him defeat McGregor via submission in one of 2016’s most memorable upsets.

McGregor, meanwhile, built on the momentum of his August decision defeat of Diaz with a November knockout of Eddie Alvarez, which earned him the UFC lightweight title. Given that he still owned the UFC featherweight crown at the time, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently.
