Robert Whittaker defeated Yoel Romero via unanimous decision in the main event of last night’s UFC 213 fight card, thus capturing the promotions interim middleweight championship belt.
With the win, Whittaker became the first Australian fighter in UFC history to become a title holder.
Whittaker will now get set to face current UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in a title unification bout that should take place later this fall or winter.
In the co-main event of UFC 213, Alistair Overeem was able to survive a late surge from Fabricio Werdum and earn a majority decision victory over the former UFC heavyweight champion of the world.
The fight marked the third time that Werdum and Overeem had squared off, with Fabricio winning the pairs first fight encounter and Alistair emerging victorious in their second fight in Strikeforce.
Overeem is hoping that the victory secures him a rematch with current UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who defeated Alistair via a thrilling first-round knockout at UFC 203 this past September in Cleveland, Ohio.
On Friday night, a new UFC star was born as former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje scored an amazing TKO victory in a fight of the year candidate scrap against perennial division contender Michael Johnson.
“The Menace” was able to badly hurt Gaethje on two separate occasions, but Justin was able to weather the storm and come back like “The Terminator” to TKO Johnson in the final seconds of round two.
UFC President Dana White spoke to the UFC’s Megan Olivi about both the TUF 25 Finale and UFC 213 fight cards in his annual event recap on Saturday night.
Check out what the brash UFC boss had to say.
