It has been said time and time again that in the sport of mixed martial arts, you experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Rock Jon Jones

UFC 214 displayed just that, especially in the main event light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. Cormier went into the title fight rematch as the champion while Jones came in the challenger after coming off a year suspension after testing positive for banned substances.

After the first two rounds came to an end, it was a competitive fight between the two rivals who have had so much animosity and history with one another. On the judge’s scorecards, two judges had it split with Jones winning round one and Cormier winning round two while the third judge had scored both rounds for Jones.

The third round would end decisively for Jones after landing a head kick that stunned Cormier and had him badly hurt. Jones could see the kick that he landed his shin flush on the side of Cormier’s head had DC in trouble and followed up with an attack where Cormier ultimately fell down while trying to avoid Jones’ offense. After Cormier fell to the ground, still dazed from the head kick, “Bones” followed up with a violent ground and pound attack that left Cormier knocked out cold.

Jones celebrated with the championship belt wrapped around his waist once again and Cormier couldn’t contain his emotions as he wept after coming to a realization that he had lost. With the decisive win, the rivalry between the two enemies seemed to come to an end as Jones praised DC for his character. “He has been a model champion, a model husband, a model father, a teammate, leader, and I aspire to be more like that man,” said Jones.

In Joe Rogan’s controversial post-fight Octagon interview with Cormier was filled with emotions and DC couldn’t help but to let them show. “Ah man, I’m so disappointed,” Cormier said. “I guess if he wins both fights, there is no rivalry.”
