Not long ago, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping suggested he would turn down a fight with contender Yoel Romero, even if Romero beat former champ Chris Weidman at UFC 205. His reluctance to accept this potential fight was based on Romero’s failing a drug test in early 2016 – which was ultimately deemed to be the result of his consumption of a tainted supplement. “If Yoel beats Chris, I honestly don’t think I’ll fight Yoel, because he tested positive for steroids,” he said on his podcast The Countdown with Michael Bisping. “I read an article recently that said that it takes years for the advantages of taking steroids to get out of your system. Just because you don’t test positive anymore doesn’t mean you’ll lose all the extra muscle and stuff like that that you were able to achieve. So I think he needs longer, I really do, and I don’t see why he should be rewarded.”

The next middleweight title bout could be a matchup between champion Michael Bisping and challenger Yoel Romero. After a devastating finish over former middleweight champion Chris Weidman at UFC 205 over the weekend, Romero and Bisping had a little exchange during the “Soldier of God’s” post-fight Octagon interview as “The Count” was in attendance hosting the fight recaps for UFC on FOX.

While Yoel Romero is undeniably the #1 contender at middleweight following his vicious 3rd round KO of Chris Weidman this past weekend at UFC 205, Romero is also on the receiving end of quite a bit of criticism given his controversial mid-fight antics. The most notable situation came back in 2014, when Romero was nearly finished by Kennedy at the end of the 2nd round of their UFC 178 fight. Between the second and third rounds, Romero and his corner engaged in several blatantly obvious acts to allow him more time to recover before the start of the third round, ultimately buying ‘Soldier Of God’ an extra minute on the stool. When the third round started, Romero went out and TKOd Kennedy just 58 seconds into the round.

The “Soldier of God” is looking to get a chance against UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and UFC President Dana White has already stated that the fight makes sense.

On the main card of UFC 205, top ranked UFC middleweight Yoel Romero made his triumphant return to the Octagon following a suspension. While Romero appeared to have lost the first round, he appeared to have found his rhythm in the second as he began to utilize his elite level wrestling more and more. In the third round, Romero landed a brutal flying knee that instantly knocked Weidman out, opening up a massive cut on the side of Weidman’s head that poured blood out on the Octagon. With the win, Romero is now the middleweight #1 contender and has earned himself a crack at Michael Bisping’s middleweight championship.

The Cuban sent Weidman crashing to the canvas after landing a brutal flying knee in the early second of the third-round and then followed up with some punches forcing the referee to step in. If he’s able to do so impressively, it’ll be difficult to deny him a title shot against reigning middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Unfortunately for Romero, Bisping does not seem to be interested in this fight. On a recent episode of his podcast The Countdown with Michael Bisping & Luis J Gomez, Bisping asserted that he’d be hesitant to fight Romero, even if he defeats Weidman at UFC 205. The champ’s reluctance is based on Romero’s recent brush with USADA, which was ultimately deemed to be the result of his consumption of a tainted supplement.

Since winning the UFC middleweight title with a June decimation of Luke Rockhold, Michael Bisping has received plenty of flack for his alleged tendency to pick and choose his opponents. Instead of taking on a legitimate contender in his first defense, the Brit took on a 46-year-old Dan Henderson in an effort to avenge an ugly 2009 knockout loss. Once this title defense was in the books, Bisping set his sights on title fights with Georges St-Pierre, a welterweight who has not fought in several years, and Nick Diaz, a welterweight riding a similar layoff who has not won a fight since 2o11. The champ then found himself on the receiving end of some serious fan backlash when he refused to fight top middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the same time frame. Though the champ has since done his best to justify his callouts of GSP and Diaz, and subsequent reluctance to fight Jacare, many fans are disappointed with his selectiveness in terms of possible opponents.

In advance of this high-stakes middleweight showdown, Weidman has thrown a handful of accusations Romero’s way, most of which surround the former Olympian’s early-2016 brush with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Though this controversy was ultimately deemed to be the result of a tainted supplement, Weidman still has doubts that Romero is a clean fighter.

The UFC middleweight contender is affirming his innocence after testing positive for banned substances, which resulted in failing an out-of-competition drug test back in December. Romero and his legal team have claimed that the UFC middleweight took a dietary supplement that unknowingly was tainted with banned substances.
