In controversial fashion, Perry decided not to use a traditional corner for his fight, instead just having his girlfriend in his corner in what was a UFC first. Other fighters have had their significant others in the corner before, including fighters like Matt Wiman and Montana De La Rosa, but this was the first instance of a fighter solely having their corner just be their significant other with no coaching staff to speak of.

The organization’s president, Dana White, claimed that the fighter was asking too much money for a Francis Ngannou mega fight. “Bones” responded and accused White of lying, as he denied even offering a set figure or entering matchup negotiations. He also suggested that he feels undervalued by the organization and isn’t paid accordingly, especially compared to boxers like Deontay Wilder. Smith was making his return after nearly a full year away from the Octagon due to injuries to take on Glover Teixeira. Early on, “Lionheart” was having a ton of success but after the first round, the tides shifted. The Brazilian dominated the rest of the fight, dropping Smith and landing vicious ground and pound shots to eventually earn a fifth-round TKO win.
