Since Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 in April for refusing to fulfill his media obligations, there have been talks of the Irish superstar making the jump to boxing to compete against undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather. While at that time talks progressed to the point that Colin Cowherd even announced the targeted date for the bout, the fight never materialized. Now, on the heels of McGregor’s UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez last month, which saw ‘Notorious’ claim the UFC lightweight championship and become the first ever simultaneous two-division UFC champion when he picked up a second round TKO win over Alvarez, talks of a McGregor-Mayweather boxing match have once again picked up steam.

Earlier this month, in a shocking move, it was revealed that Conor McGregor had relinquished the featherweight championship just weeks after winning the lightweight championship at UFC 205, where he became the first simultaneous two-division UFC champion. The move came after it was revealed that Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his main event scrap with Anthony Johnson due to a groin tear. As a result, the UFC promoted the co-main event scrap between Max Holloway & former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis to the main event, and made the bout an interim featherweight title fight, with interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo subsequently being promoted to the undisputed featherweight champion.

While some think a superfight between the two is a great idea for combat sports, others believe that given the fact that the two men compete in different sports, a fight should never take place.

Given that he still owned the organization’s featherweight title at the time of this win, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously. With this history making win in the books, McGregor has opted to take some time away from the sport to start a family with long-time girlfriend Dee Devlin. According to a report from the Irish publication The Sunday Life, however, the 28-year-old is staying plenty busy during his hiatus from fighting.

While some believe that McGregor’s precision striking, combined with the power in his left hand, would make for a successful transition to the boxing ring, others believe that regardless of his boxing abilities in MMA, McGregor doesn’t stand a chance against top ranked boxers, especially Floyd Mayweather.
