Prior to UFC 202, tensions were quickly rising between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor ahead of their highly anticipated rematch. Tensions reached their breaking point when Conor McGregor arrived at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference nearly half an hour late. That didn’t sit too well with Nate Diaz, who quickly got up and walked out of the press conference. Diaz returned just moments later with his entire team for a mass exodus from the event.

After Conor McGregor won the UFC featherweight championship by defeating Jose Aldo back in the main event of UFC 194, it didn’t take long for the newly crowned featherweight champ to sign the contract for his next fight. The fight was slated to be a lightweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC 196 on March 5th. Unfortunately, dos Anjos was forced out of the fight with a broken foot just two weeks before the fight. Ultimately the UFC selected Nate Diaz as a fill-in opponent for McGregor, and moved the fight to 170 pounds.

Last December, Irish superstar Conor McGregor won the UFC featherweight title by knocking out former champion Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds. Instead of defending that title, the Irishman’s next move was an immediate jump up to lightweight to challenge for former champion Rafael Dos Anjos’ crown. As we now know, of course, this is not the way things would unfold. Dos Anjos withdrew from this bout from an injury, only to be replaced by Stockton’s Nate Diaz, who defeated McGregor in a last-minute welterweight bout. A few months later, McGregor would even the score with Diaz, scoring a majority decision win in their UFC 202 welterweight rematch. And all the while, the featherweight division trundled on without it’s undisputed champion.

The strange thing about McGregor, however, is that he’s spent the entirety of his UFC career fighting at weight classes that do not appear to be the ideal fit for him. At featherweight, where he won the divisional title, he faced a brutal weight cut. At welterweight, where he would go 1-1 with Diaz, he was clearly undersized. Yet now that he’s achieved his title goals at featherweight, and avenged his welterweight loss to Diaz, the Irishman appears poised to shift to the division that seems to be his best fit: lightweight.
