Dominick Cruz turned down Cody Garbrandt rematch

In the co-main event of UFC 207, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz stepped into the Octagon with undefeated Team Alpha Male prospect Cody Garbrandt for a highly anticipated grudge match. The fight saw both men send verbal jabs back and forth over the course of several months, and even almost come to blows backstage at UFC 205, where UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was forced to intervene and separate the men so a physical altercation didn’t ensue. Ultimately, when the pair stepped into the Octagon, it was Garbrandt who emerged victorious, leaving fight fans stunned as he out-struck Cruz over the course of the 5-round affair, dropping ‘The Dominator’ several times throughout the fight.

Cruz sucessfully defended his title against longtime rival Urijah Faber at UFC 199 but was unable to overcome Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207 in December.

In a post fight interview with UFC reporter Megan Olivi, the Brazilian talent was asked who he’d like to take on next. After a moment of consideration, he made a courteous callout of former champ Dominick Cruz, who surrendered the bantamweight title to Cody Garbrandt in December. “I think Dominick Cruz would make a lot of sense right now,” Assuncao said. “He’s right there up in the top rankings. I don’t see any other guy. I need to get good consistency in my fight career.”

Cody Garbrandt hasn’t been quiet since he stole the UFC bantamweight title from Dominick Cruz in late December. In the moments after his bantamweight title win, Garbrandt surprised by suggesting he’d like to give Cruz an immediate rematch. Shortly thereafter, he made waves by telling MMA reporter Ariel Helwani that he was interested in a “money fight” with reigning UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo. Both of these ideas, not surprisingly, drew the ire of TJ Dillashaw, a former bantamweight champion who currently holds the division’s number one contender spot.

Until last week, rising bantamweight contender Jimmie Rivera expected to take on dangerous veteran Bryan Caraway on the main card of the UFC’s upcoming return to Phoenix. Then, Caraway pulled out of the fight with an injury. Though Ecuador’s Marlon “Chito” Vera was briefly targeted as Caraway’s replacement, Rivera ultimately turned down this last-minute challenge, explaining that, at this juncture of his career, it just didn’t make sense. “I found out Monday Caraway was out,” Rivera told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani. “Didn’t find anyone new until Thursday. My coach and I discussed that it wouldn’t be a fair fight for the guy. I’m not bullying some guy who wins some and loses some. I want to fight the best of the best. I trained for Caraway, so either I wait for him to get better or fight someone at the very top of the weight class.”

Leading up to the fight, Garbrandt stated several times that he would be happy to give Cruz a rematch when he emerged from UFC 207 victorious. In addition however, leading up to UFC 207, Garbrandt and former teammate TJ Dillashaw exchanged barbs. With both men emerging from their respective UFC 207 fights victorious, many believe the stage had been set for a fight between the two former teammates.
