Back in November, Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s dominant reign as UFC women’s bantamweight champion came to an abrupt and brutal end, as she was put down by a first-round punch from unheralded challenger “Thug” Rose Namajunas. In the wake of this shocking, upset loss, Jedrzejczyk blamed a brutal cut down to the strawweight division’s 115-pound limit for her performance. Unsurprisingly, she’s hoping for a much better weight cut ahead of her upcoming rematch with Namajunas, which co-headlines UFC 223 on April 7.

Back in November, in the first of three title fights on the UFC 217 bill, Joanna Jedrzejczyk lost the UFC strawweight title to Rose Namajunas, succumbing to a first-round knockout. While this emphatic loss marked the end of her longstanding title reign, Jedrzejczyk seems to have taken it in stride. In fact, she says her life is better than it was before she lost the title. “Life has been great, better than before,” Jedrzejczyk told Jim Edwards of MMANytt. “After my last fight my life just got better. I have honest people – I’m surrounded by good and honest people and life is good. I know the value of my life, my family, my friends and the real people around me unlike before.”

A fight result doesn’t get quite as shocking as the first of three title changes from November 4th, 2017. UFC 217 marked a historic and incredible night for the UFC and one of those reasons was due to how the then title challenger, Rose Namajunas was able to cut through reigning champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk with her striking. No one had ever had as much success against Joanna in such a short amount of time let alone defeat her. Rose was able to score a big early knockdown before finally capping the night off with a big left hook that forced echoing, ‘Thug Rose!’ chants out of the light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier on commentary.

Their rematch takes place at UFC 223 on April 7.

In a couple of months, Rose Namajunas will march into the Octagon again to see if she can beat former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk back-to-back at UFC 223. Teammate and friend Justin Gaethje thinks it’s as good as wrapped up already. Citing difficulties with her weight cut, Jedrzejczyk says things will be different this time in the rematch. Gaethje thinks that the way Namajunas won, didn’t have anything to do with the weight cut, which shouldn’t be an excuse anyway. “I think [Joanna Jedrzejczyk]’s weak-minded for [talking about her drastic weight cut complications], even if it is true. It’s her own business. And no matter what, it could be true to the core and you could have proof, who’s going to [care]? Like, I’m not going to support you. Okay, whose fault was it? At the end of the day, whose fault was it? It was your fault. Do you have a scale at your house? Then you get to step on the scale every single morning, just like every single one of us do. We worry about our weight the whole camp, and I’ve never had a nutritionist help me in my entire life. […] I made weight in college eating McDonald’s every day. It’s willpower. You either f-cking do it or you don’t do it.”

With a slew of wild superfights down the pipeline for 2018, the fights at UFC 223 are still so crazy that they shine through the chaos. Not only is Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting Tony Ferguson in the main event, the co-main will be Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s highly anticipated rematch with Rose Namajunas. The stoic Thug Rose boxed up the dominant champion and shocked the world at UFC 217, now they run it back. This time, Namajunas thinks she’ll get the submission and cement herself as the best strawweight on the planet beating Jedrzejczyk back-to-back like Max Holloway did to Jose Aldo. “It’s probably the most exciting fight that everybody can look forward to. I think that’s a big part of [Joanna Jedrzejczyk getting the immediate rematch], but also I don’t see anybody else that can really challenge at this point. You’ve got Jessica Andrade and Tecia [Torres] will probably be the only other one, maybe Claudia Gadelha but I thought she was injured. Joanna’s beaten all those girls, other than Tecia obviously, but she’s way far ahead of those other girls. […] I had a perfect gampelan for everything that [Jedrzejczyk] was doing. I knew exactly where she was going to be, where she was, I’ve been studying her for many years and knew exactly what she was going to do before she did it.”

Two of Poland’s finest fighters across all divisions happen to be the former strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and the former challenger, Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Since they met each other in the octagon at UFC 205, they have each gone 1-1 in their two fights that followed. Ironically enough, each of their upcoming bouts take place on the same night at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York on April 7.

At UFC 217, the 25-year-old, “Thug” Rose Namajunas dispatched of the then reigning champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk effortlessly to earn a first-round knockout victory. The fight was in November and we’ve since learned from the former Strawweight queen, Joanna that this was one of if not the worst weight cut of her career. She has also been one of the bigger 115 lbers and had fought previously at 125 lbs in her career before coming to the UFC. But when it comes to her toughest time making her division’s limit, the fight with Rose took the cake as she described it as a “miracle” that she made weight.

In a shocking upset, Namajunas put the champ Jedrzejczyk down with a first-round punch, taking the belt for herself in the process. Now, the pair have been pencilled in for a rematch at UFC 223, which goes down on April 7 in Brooklyn, New York. Despite the fact that Namajunas won the first encounter, she has once again been identified as the underdog in this fight.

Fresh off the heels of an undisputed title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson being made official for UFC 223, there is another huge fight being slated to join them. Rose Namajunas is expected to defend her UFC strawweight championship against former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk after shockingly taking it from her back at UFC 217 in one of the organization’s biggest upsets in their history. First reported by TalkMMA, the information has now been confirmed by Ariel Helwani as being discussed, but not finalized yet. There’s so much trash talk in MMA. Between all the social media jabs and competition-fueled drama, sometimes it’s a welcome change of pace to see some super sweet news. Joanna Jedrzejczyk is no stranger to philanthropy or making her time available to fans. She was even shooting hoops with some neighborhood kids before UFC 217. Just yesterday though, she did something very special. After Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s fight with Rose Namajunas, the former champion never made excuses. However, she did mention that something personal happened going into the fight but never revealed what it could have been. Yesterday the news finally broke that Jedrzejczyk was dealing with an absolutely brutal cut that she kept under wraps until just now. UFC 193 is most commonly remembered for being the night that Ronda Rousey’s reign ended to Holly Holm. And rightfully so, that was a historic upset and change for the Bantamweight division. But that night also featured one of the former Strawweight queen, Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s five title defenses while champion. Joanna took on Canadian challenger, Valerie Letourneau on route to earning a unanimous decision. Letourneau was with American Top Team at the time while Joanna had yet to make the move on over. Now teammates, Letourneau recently spoke to Sherdog about her former opponent’s first career loss from UFC 217. When asked whether or not she though Joanna was overconfident going into her bout with Rose Namajunas, Letourneau had this to say: “I don’t think so. It’s always been her attitude. We are very different. I like to be very humble. I don’t talk too much. I don’t like to show off. I think most Canadians are like that,” Letourneau said “It’s always been her attitude. But she is a different person in the gym. She’s not cocky in the gym. She’s close to everybody. She’s coming to the gym riding her bicycle. I don’t see her this way. This is what matters the most to me. She’s been training so freaking hard. This is something that inspires me from Joanna, is how hard [she trains] after beating almost everybody in the division. She didn’t take this fight lightly.
