As UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh is just days away, we caught up with the welterweight slugger earlier in the week to preview his fight with Thiago Alves. Unfortunately, it was announced to that Thiago was removed from the card and replaced by Alex Reyes. While we didn’t get a chance to talk about all the drama that’s unfolded in the past 24 hours for Mike, we did discuss the welterweight division and all of the potential matchups going forward. Another great conversation with “Platinum!”

Mike Perry Already Has a New Opponent for UFC Pittsburgh

Justin Golightly - September 13, 2017

Just a couple of hours ago, it was announced that Thiago Alves wasn’t going to make it to UFC Pittsburgh to fight Mike Perry due to undisclosed reasons. Along with the recent Jon Jones and Jesse Taylor news today, a co-main event falling through was just icing on the bad day cake. Before we even put up the tissues, ‘Platinum’ Perry jumped back on the interwebs to let us know not to worry. Someone has already stepped up to fight him in place of the UFC veteran. Thiago Alves Is Out of The Fight With Mike Perry at UFC Pittsburgh

Justin Golightly - September 13, 2017

This weekend, UFC Pittburgh goes down with a collection of some scrappy fights headlined by Luke Rockhold and David Branch. Unfortunately, there will be one less fight we can look forward to. Thiago Alves had to pull out of his fight with Mike Perry according to MMA Fighting. Right now the reasons are undisclosed, however Alves does live in Florida and he and his family could have been affected by the storm. This was something Perry was worried about, so he left a week earlier as a resident of Florida himself. A recent update from Ariel Helwani seems to confirm it was storm related complications. For those wondering about Thiago Alves, I’m told he was stranded due to Irma. Decided against leaving early to stay with his wife and child.

Welterweight contenders Colby Covington and Mike Perry swap heat on Twitter

Tom Taylor - September 13, 2017

Colby Covington and Mike Perry, two of the UFC’s most promising welterweight contenders, have been exchanging a bit of trash talk on Twitter. This heat began when when a fan asked Covington what his prediction was for Mike Perry’s UFC Pittsburgh scrap with Thiago Alves. Given that Alves is one of Covington’s teammates at American Top Team, his answer wasn’t particularly surprising.

Mike Perry on Thiago Alves: "I hope he does miss weight!"

Tom Taylor - August 3, 2017

On September 16, when the UFC touches down in Pittsburgh, PA, ever entertaining welterweight “Platinum” Mike Perry will step onto the canvas with former welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves. Alves, of course, has long stood out as one of the welterweight division’s most exciting – and dangerous  – fighters. The one knock against the Brazilian star, however, is that he’s had some real difficulty making weight in the past. To recount, Alves has missed weight for welterweight fights with Matt Hughes and Jon Fitch, and for his lone attempt at making lightweight, when he tipped the scales at 162 pounds rather than the mandated 155. And while he seemed to have his weight under control for his last fight – an exciting decision defeat of Patrick Cote – there seems to be an ever-present possibility that he misses again.

Mike Perry shares crazy story about accidentally swallowing a piece of metal, "cutting his insides up"

Tom Taylor - August 3, 2017

On September 16, all-action welterweight “Platinum” Mike Perry will step into the Octagon with former title challenger Thiago Alves. While Perry has endured pretty difficult weight cuts in the past, he expects his cut for this battle with Alves to be quite easy. This is in part due to intense training and clean eating, but also due to a wild accident wherein Perry swallowed a piece of metal and got violently ill. The fan favorite welterweight shared this story on the latest episode of BJ Penn Radio:

Mike Perry Details heated run in with Jeremy Stephens at athlete retreat

Tom Taylor - May 23, 2017

Over the weekend, the UFC flew more than 400 of its fighters out to Las Vegas for a special, athletes retreat. This retreat has generated quite a few headlines over the last few days – and very few of them have been positive. Mike Perry, however, had an amazing time participating. While Perry’s review of the retreat is overwhelming positive, however, he did have one slightly negative experience when he ran into UFC featherweight Jeremy Stephens. Apparently, things got tense enough that Perry pushed Stephens onto the ground. Perry recounted the run-in in an interview with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor.

Mike Perry explains why the UFC athletes retreat was the greatest weekend of his life

Tom Taylor - May 23, 2017

Last weekend, the UFC flew nearly its entire roster out to Las Vegas for a special, athletes retreat. This retreat has generated quite a few headlines over the last few days – and very few of them have been positive. According to welterweight star Mike Perry, however, any bellyaching about this athletes retreat is unwarranted. On Tuesday afternoon, the knockout artist connected with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor to share his elation with the experience as a whole. “I learned a lot this weekend,” Perry began.

Last month, on the main card of the UFC’s latest trip to Nashville, Tennessee, hard-hitting welterweight “Platinum” Mike Perry authored one of the most violent knockouts in recent memory, flatlining Jake Ellenberger with a slicing, second round elbow. In the wake of this career changing win, Perry used his elevated station to call out several of the welterweight division’s top players, including one-time welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves.

Al Iaquinta: If they paid me good enough I’d love to fight Mike Perry

Tom Taylor - May 8, 2017

Last month, in the co-main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Nashville, Tennessee, lightweight star Al Iaquinta scored a crushing, one-punch knockout over the durable veteran Diego Sanchez. Earlier the same night, welterweight star “Platinum” Mike authored a 2016 knockout of the year contender, cutting Jake Ellenberger down with a second-round elbow. Since then, Iaquinta has once again shared many criticisms of the UFC, lambasting the promotion for the way it pays and treats its fighters. Perry, meanwhile, has criticized Iaquinta for “complaining a lot,” and even challenged him to a fight at 170 pounds.

Jake Ellenberger doesn't want to end his career with KO loss to Mike Perry

Tom Taylor - May 2, 2017

If you watched UFC Fight Night 108, which went down in Nashville, Tennessee in late April, you watched Jake Ellenberger get cut down by a blistering Mike Perry elbow. Ellenberger’s knockout loss to Perry was brutal enough that it caused many members of the MMA community to suggest it might be time for him to retire – especially given the fact that it’s not his first knockout loss of late.

bjpenndotcom - April 29, 2017

This past weekend at ‘UFC Fight Night: Nashville’, UFC welterweight veteran Jake Ellenberger stepped into the Octagon with welterweight prospect Mike Perry for a highly anticipated showdown. For Ellenberger, he was looking to return to the win column following a controversial TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal, where he was declared TKOd after he got his big toe stuck in the cage. For Perry, he too was looking to return to the win column to bounce back from his first professional loss, where he dropped a unanimous decision to Alan Jouban.

Mike Perry and Al Iaquinta trade barbs on Twitter

bjpenndotcom - April 28, 2017

Following ‘UFC Fight Night: Nashville’ both UFC welterweight Mike Perry and UFC lightweight Al Iaquinta engaged in a rather heated feud. Iaquinta returned to the UFC at ‘UFC Fight Night: Nashville’ following a 2-year layoff, making a statement in his return fight as he knocked out Diego Sanchez in the first round of their three round scrap. Following the event, Iaquinta put his employers on blast for not giving him a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for the win.

Mike Perry offers Al Iaquinta advice regarding dispute with UFC

bjpenndotcom - April 27, 2017

Prior to his UFC return this past weekend, where he picked up an impressive first round KO win over Diego Sanchez, UFC lightweight Al Iaquinta was engaged in a very long and very public contract dispute with the UFC. The dispute was so heated that Iaquinta even went as far as to retire from MMA, and pursue a real estate career full-time. Iaquinta and the UFC were ultimately able to reach an agreement, and ‘Raging Al’ returned to the Octagon nearly two years later at ‘UFC Fight Night: Nashville’ this past weekend. Much to his frustration, the UFC didn’t award him with a post-fight bonus despite his spectacular first round KO. This led to Iaquinta putting his bosses on blast in interviews, and on social media.

Tom Taylor - April 27, 2017

Last weekend, on the main card of the UFC’s latest trip to Nashville, Tennessee, rising welterweight “Platinum” Mike Perry scored a veritable knockout of the year contender over the veteran Jake Ellenberger. This win – which marks his first over a ranked UFC welterweight – sets him up for more big tests inside the UFC welterweight division. He’s got some ideas to that end.
