Rafael dos Anjos weighs-in on potential McGregor Mayweather superfight

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

In early 2017, talks of a potential Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather superfight picked up steam as Mayweather offered McGregor $15 million to accept the boxing match. While McGregor of course didn’t publicly fire back at Mayweather, UFC President Dana White was quick to make a counteroffer as he offered the undefeated prizefighter $25 million to fight McGregor, with McGregor also getting an even $25 million. Mayweather of course wasn’t satisfied with the $25 million dollar offer, and called UFC President Dana White a comedian as he reiterated that he would not fight for less than $100 million. Throughout all of this, boxing promoter Bob Arum has maintained that the talks are all meaningless, saying:

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

Later this year, UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will defend his bantamweight championship for the first time as he steps into the Octagon against former teammate TJ Dillashaw for a highly anticipated scrap. Leading up to Garbrandt’s UFC 207 scrap with Dominick Cruz, former Team Alpha Male teammate TJ Dillashaw took to Twitter to allege that he had made Garbrandt cry in training when the pair trained together at Team Alpha Male. This lead to a back and forth between the two men over the course of the next several weeks as Garbrandt and Dillashaw lobbed insults at one another as Garbrandt claimed to have footage of himself knocking out Dillashaw in training. In addition, ‘No Love’ claimed that he had footage of himself knocking out the former champ. Ultimately, the UFC decided to cash in on the beef and book both men to coach opposite each other on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, with the pair meeting in the Octagon for Garbrandt’s bantamweight belt at the end of the season.

Mark Hunt: I didn't know Brock Lesnar was using PEDs before UFC 200

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

Leading up to UFC 200, where former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar made his highly anticipated return to the Octagon after 5 years away from the Octagon, there was quite a bit of controversy regarding Lesnar’s USADA exemption that saw him evade the first several months of random USADA drug testing leading up to the fight. Despite that, Lesnar was tested multiple times between the time it was announced that he would be fighting, and fight night. Following his win over Mark Hunt, it was revealed that Lesnar had failed a pre-fight and a fight night drug test. While he is currently serving a year-long suspension for the infraction, Mark Hunt has been very outspoken regarding the situation, even going as far as to file a civil suit against Lesnar and the UFC over the matter.

Amanda Nunes to retire after '2-3 fights'

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

Going into 2017, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes is riding the momentum of a dominant 2016, where she went 3-0, winning the UFC women’s bantamweight championship before then defending her belt for the first time at UFC 207, where she handed former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey her second straight loss. Following the fight, Nunes revealed her plans to reign over the women’s bantamweight division as a dominant champion, while expressing her desire to make a run at the women’s featherweight title, which will be contested by Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208 in February. With that being said, according to Nunes, she doesn’t plan on sticking around for too long.

Donald Cerrone eyeing #1 contender fight at welterweight

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

After ending 2015 by dropping a 1st round TKO to Rafael dos Anjos in a failed bid for the UFC lightweight championship, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone kicked off 2016 by moving up to welterweight. Over the course of the year, Donald Cerrone posted arguably the best 2016 out of anyone in the UFC. Cerrone not only went 4-0, but also finished all four opponents, going from unranked at welterweight to #5 on the UFC’s official rankings over the course of one calendar year. Surprisingly, Donald Cerrone has gone over a month since his last fight without signing the contract for his next fight. While he has been looking for a title eliminator fight, Demian Maia is content to either wait for Robbie Lawler, or wait to fight the winner of UFC 209’s welterweight rematch between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and #1 contender Stephen Thompson.

Bethe Correia sends Amanda Nunes warning

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes had arguably one of the best years in MMA over the course of 2016. To start the year, Nunes fought top ranked women’s bantamweight Valentina Shevchenko in a highlight anticipated UFC 196 scrap which she won via unanimous decision. In her next fight, Nunes headlined UFC 200, where she won the UFC women’s bantamweight championship by rocking and then submitting Miesha Tate in the first round of their fight. In her very first title defense, Nunes closed out the year by picking up a particularly dominant and impressive 1st round KO win over former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in just 48 seconds.

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

Despite being on a 2-fight skid that has seen him drop back to back TKO losses, MMA legend Vitor Belfort remains a top 10 ranked middleweight on the UFC’s official roster. After going 0-2 over the course of 2016, reports surfaced that Belfort was going to retire following his UFC 204 loss to Gegard Mousasi, however he then announced that he wasn’t retiring, he was merely looking to return to the Octagon as ‘The Phenom’ and return to the win column in 2017.

Anderson Silva breaks down upcoming fight with Derek Brunson

Scott Hernandez - January 21, 2017

On February 11th at UFC 208, former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva will step into the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown with middleweight prospect Derek Brunson. For Anderson Silva, he will be looking to return to the win column and secure his first win since his 2012 win over Stephan Bonnar. While Silva defeated Nick Diaz in early 2015, he failed a drug test for PEDs, and the win was overturned to a no contest. As a result, Anderson Silva is currently on a 4-fight skid that is broken into a 2-fight skid by the no contest with Diaz. Following his no contest fight with Diaz, Silva dropped a controversial unanimous decision to Michael Bisping in London, before then stepping in on just 48 hours notice to fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 in July, where he dropped a unanimous decision.
