Earlier this month, at ‘UFC Fight Night: Phoenix’, UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown with streaking featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez. For Penn, he was seeking his first win in over 5 years as he planned to make a run at the featherweight strap. Unfortunately for the UFC Hall of Famer, Yair Rodriguez’ dynamic and unorthodox striking proved to be too much as he continued to land numerous kicks on the former two-division champ, who showed tremendous heart as he continued to pursue the finish despite continuing to be tagged.

The biggest ongoing story in combat sports today surrounds the possibility of a mega-fight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather. Over the course of the last year, there have been ceaseless headlines about this bout. After UFC President Dana White made Mayweather what he called a “real offer” of $25 million earlier this month, buzz about this prospective battle reached new heights. Of course, Mayweather is not the only boxer keen on welcoming McGregor to the boxing ring, he’s simply the most high-profile to do so. McGregor has also been challenged by boxers like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Amir Khan, and Paul Malignaggi.

On March 4th, top ranked UFC lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will be stepping into the Octagon to fight for the interim lightweight championship in UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s absence. It took several weeks for the UFC to finalize the bout, and while it looked as though the UFC and Ferguson would be able to reach a deal after Ferguson expressed his desire to hold out for more money from the promotion, the promotion was able to secure the fight for the co-main event of UFC 209.

Earlier this month, it was announced that top ranked lightweights Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson would be stepping into the Octagon at UFC 209 on March 4th for a highly anticipated lightweight matchup for the interim lightweight strap. That fight will serve as the co-main event on the card behind a welterweight rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, who will be fighting for Woodley’s welterweight strap.

The UFC rankings have been updated to reflect the landscape of all the weight classes in addition to the pound-for-pound list following UFC Fight Night 103. The biggest change came in the flyweight division where Sergio Pettis jumped up six spots to the #9 ranking with his win over John Moraga, which dropped Moraga down 5 spots to the #13 ranking.

While negotiations have begun between Floyd Mayweather and UFC President Dana White for a potential boxing superfight between Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor, there is still an extremely long road ahead before an agreement is reached. Mayweather started the year by offering McGregor $15 million for a boxing match, with the boxing icon leaving the door open to negotiations regarding the PPV split.

Earlier this month, streaking featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez picked up the biggest win of his career as he not only defeated, but TKOd UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn in the main event of their ‘UFC Fight Night: Phoenix’ scrap. The fight was a particularly dominant one for Yair Rodriguez, who showcased his excellent striking throughout the fight, landing 56 of 113 total strikes at 49%, and landing 55 of 111 significant strikes for a total of 49% compares to Penn landing 7 of 27 total strikes at 25%, and 4 of 22 significant strikes at 18%. In addition to landing more shots, many of Yair Rodriguez’ significant strikes that landed were head kicks, something he doesn’t necessarily feel bad about.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former UFC pound for pound kingpin Jon Jones have a very long and very public feud dating back several years. While the men have been booked to fight numerous times, they have only stepped into the Octagon once, where Jones emerged victorious. After their UFC 200 scrap in July fell through just 48 hours before the men were set to step into the Octagon, Jones was handed a one-year suspension, keeping him sidelined until July of 2017. With that being said, Cormier is still looking for a Jon Jones rematch.

Penn of course was stepping into the Octagon to fight streaking featherweight contender Yair Rodriguez in a highly anticipated main event showdown in Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately for Penn, when he stepped into the Octagon with ‘Pantera’, the young fighter picked him apart with kicks, ultimately picking up a second round TKO win over Penn, knocking ‘The Prodigy’ down for the first time in his career with a punch.

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks will be going up in weight to fight in the middleweight division for his next bout. According to a report from Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, the UFC is working on Johny Hendricks vs. Hector Lombard for UFC Fight Night: Halifax, which is scheduled to take place on February 19. This will be Hendrick’s middleweight debut as he has had several incidents with making the 170-pound welterweight limit and after missing weight in his bout against Neil Magny at UFC 207 in December, the former champion said he was done fighting at welterweight.

There were many questions regarding how Ronda Rousey‘s striking would look leading up to the fight after having taken a year off following her UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm in November of 2015, however when Rousey stepped into the Octagon with Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, it didn’t take long for Nunes to expose Rousey’s underdeveloped striking game.
