Cain Velasquez not surprised by Brock Lesnar’s failed drug test
Prior to UFC 200, it was revealed that former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was coming out of retirement to fight heavyweight veteran Mark Hunt on the main card of the historic event.
While Lesnar’s return was generally celebrated amongst the MMA community, it was met with a certain amount of controversy. Ordinarily, before a retired fighter can fight, they must go through a 4-month mandatory testing period with USADA before they are eligible to fight.
In Lesnar’s case, the UFC waived the mandatory 4-month testing period, and he was only tested for one month before the fight. After his unanimous decision win over Mark Hunt, it was revealed that Lesnar had failed a pre-fight out of competition drug test. It was then revealed that in addition to the out-of-competition drug test, it was revealed that Lesnar failed a fight night drug test.
The way Cain Velasquez sees it, the failure wasn’t a huge surprise. He spoke on The MMA Hour:
“I would say from looking at his body that it didn’t surprise me, you know? He’s just a big, massive guy and you don’t see other fighters like that.”
“That he came out positive, it kind of sucks because I just want my competitors, the guys who I fight against, I want them to be on the same level that I am, you know?” said Velasquez, who defeated Travis Browne at UFC 200. “Just some of the people out there that are cheating, it’s good that we’re catching them, USADA is doing a great job of catching them, and hopefully discourages others from doing them so this sport can be a clean sport.”
So far there has been no word as to when Lesnar will return to the Octagon. The former heavyweight champ is currently temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission awaiting a hearing.
