Not everybody, however, agreed with this result. Shortly after the judges’ verdict was read, there was an outpouring of criticism suggesting that Thompson, not Till, should have been awarded the victory.

Yesterday afternoon, Darren Till missed weight for his UFC Liverpool headlining showdown with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, tipping the scales 3.5 pounds above the welterweight limit of 171 pounds. After a period of much confusion and speculation, we learned that the fight would go ahead as planned, so long as Till weighed in at less than 188 pounds at 1:00pm BST on Sunday. Add UFC President Dana White to the long list of people who were incredibly disappointed that Darren Till missed weight for his highly anticipated UFC Fight Night 130 showdown with Stephen Thompson. Darren Till (16-0-1 MMA) weighed in at 174.5 pounds earlier today in Liverpool, 3.5 pounds above the welterweight limit of 171-pounds.

While reports suggest that Till’s botched weight cut is due, at least in part, to a family emergency, he’s receiving quite a bit of flack all the same. As you probably guessed, some of this flack came from the ever-outspoken Colby Covington, who will fight Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC interim welterweight title at UFC 225 this June 9.

We still have awhile before UFC Liverpool, but the UFC did their big, snazzy announcement package with Darren till front-and-center yet he still doesn’t have an opponent. Till has been eyeing number one contender Stephen Thompson, but he may not be fully healed by May 27th. Regardless, that won’t stop Darren Till from calling him out. “I made it all happen. I worked hard and believed in myself. People can climb on this train or jump off. I do not care. I did it all. I asked to face Robbie Lawler or Jorge Masvidal [at UFC Liverpool]. I know they talked to Masvidal, but he said he would not be in shape in time. I do not know who my opponent will be, but I do not care. Stephen Thompson is a great striker. He’s smart, he’s not a brawler. His style is very well thought out, just like mine is as well.”
