Ultimately, Moraes submitted Assuncao in the first round to become the clear cut number one contender in the bantamweight division.

After winning the title for the second time by defeating arch-rival, Cody Garbrandt, Dillashaw would defend it successfully against his foe in their immediate rematch at UFC 227.

On the same night, Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo did the unthinkable, capturing the UFC flyweight title from seemingly unstoppable flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson. Since then, Dillashaw and Cejudo have flirted with the notion of fighting each other. At first, the idea was that Cejudo would move up to bantamweight to challenge Dillashaw. More recently, however, Dillashaw and his coach Duane Ludwig have implied interest in dropping to flyweight to fight Cejudo.

Former World Series of Fighting bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes, who is now arguably the top contender in the stacked UFC bantamweight division, wants the next crack at divisional kingpin TJ Dillashaw. Shortly after Dillashaw authored a second, destructive win over former champ Cody Garbrandt in the main event of UFC 227 on Saturday, Moraes took to Twitter to call him out. Specifically, Moraes is hoping to fight Dillashaw at UFC 229 on October 6, which will, of course, be headline by a lightweight title mega fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

Speaking on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Moraes gave his side of the story on this back-stage skirmish, and explained that his manager Ali Abdelaziz nearly came to blows with Rivera’s coach Tiger Schulman. In his eyes, this was the fault of some misplaced aggression from Schulman.

The two have been wanting to fight each other ever since Rivera needed a replacement for his replacement. Yes, that’s worded correctly. Because originally, UFC 219 was supposed to host a fight between Rivera and former 135 kingpin, Dominick Cruz…but he suffered a broken arm. Filling in for him was John Lineker…until he had to get a tooth infection taken care. Rivera vs Moraes was never made and Rivera was pulled from the card entirely.

Things are finally looking up for former UFC featherweight title challenger Frankie Edgar. He was slated for a title shot against Max Holloway, but had to withdraw due to an injured orbital. Not only does he get another shot, but just a day after his fight with Holloway is re-booked for UFC 222, he got bumped up to first degree black belt. He wasn’t the only fighter getting the honors from Ricardo Almeida, his teammate Marlon Moraes got promoted from brown belt to black belt. “Such an honor to have these guys on our mats day in and day out. Congratulations gentleman. Marlon Moraes: Congratulations on your black belt, six years as a brown belt and I tried to promote him last year but he wouldn’t accept it. You won’t find a more humble guy. Frankie Edgar: Black belt first degree. Our team leader/captain always setting the pace we all try to follow.”
